April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month

Distracted driving, an epidemic worth taking a look into as it kills an average of 9 people everyday in the United States alone, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, with talking and texting on the phone being the leading cause of distracted driving accidents. With April being the National Distracted Awareness Month, we will take a look at some tips and reminders on how you and I can prevent these accidents.

Focus on Driving

Actively scan the road, use your mirrors and be on the lookout for pedestrians and cyclists. Remember that you are responsible for the lives of the people in and out of your vehicle.

Store distracting gear and devices

Keep items unrelated to driving in your glove compartment which may cause distraction. If you are using your phone for navigation, make sure to have the proper phone mount for your car and set your destination before driving. If making any adjustments, make sure to park your car at a safe spot and never make any changes while on the move.

Ask for assistance from your passengers

If there is a need to use your mobile phone, ask someone in your vehicle to make the call or send a text for you.

Eat before driving

If anything would occupy any one of your hands, that is a distraction. Eating while driving is doing two things at the same time, therefore, a distraction.

Address all other concerns before driving

If you cannot devote your full attention to driving because of some other activity, it is a distraction. Address it before or after your trip, not while behind the wheel.
